The University of Sheffield dates back to the foundation of Sheffield Medical School in 1828. It merged with two other colleges in 1897 to create the University College of Sheffield, which received a royal charter and its current name in 1905. It is one of the original ‘red brick’ universities and a founding member of the Russell Group.Today it hosts just over 30,000 students a year including 7,000 international students from around 150 countries around the world.
