About University of Bristol

The University of Bristol dates all the way back to the founding of the Merchant Venturers School in the city in 1595 which later became the university’s engineering facility. University College, Bristol was founded in 1876 and gained university status by royal charter in 1909. Bristol was the first higher education institution in the UK to admit men and women on an equal basis.It is a member of the Russell Group of universities and has around 27,000 students including international students from more than 130 countries. It’s ranked 61st globally in the QS World University Rankings and in the top 20 in the UK from The Guardian, The Times/Sunday Times and Complete University Guide. The University of Bristol doesn’t have a main campus in the traditional sense but its buildings are generally found within the ‘University Precinct’ area of the city. Student Life There’s plenty to keep you busy while studying here, including more than 70 sports clubs and 400 student societies with something for everyone. Bristol is one of only two universities in the UK to offer a full NHS GP practice on campus through its Student Health Service. Other support services include free student counselling, disability services and a multifaith chaplaincy. It’s also one of the first universities to be given the police certification of a ‘secured environment’ because of its commitment to safety.
