Course Overview The MSci Microbiology degree explores how microbes influence every aspect of life, from human health to the environment, and tackles global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, food security and climate change. You’ll build advanced knowledge in medical and environmental microbiology while learning how microbes can be controlled, harnessed and applied in beneficial ways. Across four years of study, you will develop specialist expertise, gain extensive practical research experience, and complete two major research projects that prepare you for scientific careers or postgraduate research. Key Program Highlights Study major global challenges including antimicrobial resistance, One Health, and microbial roles in environmental sustainability. Explore advanced topics such as the human and environmental microbiome, microbial biotechnology and the impact of biofilms. Develop strong laboratory, analytical and research skills across a wide range of microbiology disciplines. Tailor your learning with optional modules in Years 2, 3 and 4, alongside compulsory core microbiology content. Complete two substantial research projects—one in Year 3 and an advanced project in Year 4—allowing you to specialise in areas that interest you most.
